your event things to consider when organising your event:
1. Does the venue have a sound limiter?
These little traffic light devices are becoming a more common sight in many venues. Due to council regulations these limiters are placed (usually incorrectly) in music arenas to gauge the level of volume of a band or DJ. You should check that venue does not have one, and if they do, check at what level of 'dB' (decibels) it is set to. Sometimes the threshold is so low that even the audience clapping can set it off - let alone the band playing. This then cuts the power to the band and silence ensues - thereby ruining your night. Many venues don't tell you this before the deposit is paid!
2. Is it the right time to put the band on?
We've never had an empty dancefloor - however, the timings of when to launch into the band are an exact science. It's a delicate balance between the audience fatigue level vs. alcohol level vs. willingness to get up and jump around. Consider how long they've all been at it, so to speak, before subjecting them to the after-show party. Around 9pm or later seems to be the magic time whereupon everyone is usually ready to accept the kitsch musings of FAKE TAN into their lives and lose all inhibitions. Consider also; is it a summer party when most people would rather be out on the terrace drinking Pimms, as it is still daylight? Have they sat through hours of speeches, team-building games or awards beforehand, and may want to get on with it asap? Do they want time to go to the bar, chat to auntie Phil or digest the truffles before dancing? etc...
3. Is the bar near to the dance floor?
If you have a choice of where to place the bar - it is usually a no-no to place it down the corridor, up the stairs and out the back of the next building. People initially tend to congregate around the aforementioned area in preference the dance-floor. Initially, at least. They all gravitate to the dancing eventually - it is just better to keep them there from the get-go.
4. Are you hiring a DJ too?
Make sure that he/she is compatible and sympathetic to the band. In our case - make sure thay don't break into some UK garage or German techno as soon as the band leaves the stage for a break. This can destroy the evening - we've seen this happen! Bear in mind - none of this need happen as we provide iPod floor fillers for before and after or the provision for you to bring your own mix - all included in the price, thereby negating the need to hire a DJ.
5. If you need a photographer - use a GREAT one!
This is a shameless plug for a thoroughly brilliant photographer, with whom we have worked before. We cannot recommend him enough.
Guy Hearn. Genius.
6. If you need flowers - use the best.
We occasionally come across a company that really blows us away with their product and professionalism. This is one such company. So good - we've all used them at our own weddings!
